During the monsoon season, people with diabetes need to take extra precautions because humidity, infections, and changes in diet and activity can affect blood sugar levels.

Here are some important monsoon care tips for diabetes:

  • Monitor blood sugar regularly: Changes in weather and reduced physical activity can cause fluctuations in glucose levels.

  • Keep your feet dry and clean: Rainwater and damp footwear can lead to fungal infections and wounds that heal slowly in people with diabetes.

  • Avoid walking barefoot: Even indoors, wear comfortable footwear to protect your feet from cuts and infections.

  • Stay hydrated: Humid weather can still lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of clean, safe water.

  • Eat freshly prepared food: Avoid street food and foods exposed to moisture, as they can cause stomach infections and affect blood sugar control.

  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly: Monsoon increases the risk of bacterial contamination.

  • Protect your medications and glucometer: Store insulin, medicines, and testing strips in a cool, dry place away from moisture.

  • Boost immunity with a balanced diet: Include foods rich in fiber, protein, and vitamins, such as leafy vegetables, lentils, and seasonal fruits in moderation.

  • Exercise indoors if needed: If outdoor walks are difficult due to rain, try yoga, stretching, or home workouts to stay active.

  • Watch for signs of infection: Fever, cough, urinary symptoms, skin infections, or non-healing wounds should be evaluated promptly.

If you have diabetes and notice persistent high blood sugar, foot wounds, or signs of infection during the monsoon, consult your doctor promptly to avoid complications.
